Wisconson woods

Meditation. Tea. Calm. Oh, and the internet! :)

Today I'm in the North woods of WI, and have a wonderful vista of wooded land above a creek valley-- and there's lots of falling rain. If it were 6 degrees cooler we'd be in the midst of a huge blizzard, I swear.

This morning I've been taking in an online based post-view of 2006. Since this is a knitting blog I won't get into [a great deal of possible content including a massive rant on why we should end the war in iraq] what I've been thinking about.

Have a safe and happy new year!

Friday night my mom stayed in the guest room. She woke up early (per her usual) and spent some time with the dogs in the living room.

I woke up hearing her voice-- and instantly knew from her tone that she was talking to Mr. Toby* He grr'ed back at her, clearly not excited about something. (As a Basenji, he hates all forms of water. It was raining, so she must have been trying to convince him to go outside.) As soon as he heard me rustling around he came to the door and made his "uhh, uhh..." (LET ME IN!) sound.

Whoever said Basenjis were mute was completely loco.

My momma didn't wear the socks on Friday night. She didn't even bring them, so they'll make an appearance at a later date. [I'm also thinking about taking photos of all the shawls I have knit for her, too. A 'mom gallery', if you will.]

*unfortunately my mom has chosen a favorite grand puppy-- Paco. He's taken lessons in how to show just how much he loves you-- with, yes, a touch the crazy. ...and my mom loves every minute of it.

koigu sock

Here's where the I'm-a-terrible-blogger portion comes in. I forget to take photos, then don't post because who wants to read anything without pictures? Clearly I don't!

During the holidays I only gave pair of socks as a gift-- the gorgeous red ones for my mom. She absolutely adores them, but wouldn't try them on Christmas eve for a picture. Tonight we're going to see the British Television Advertisement Awards (BTAA) at the Walker, so hopefully I can snap a quick picture to show y'all.

Currently I've been working on these koigu socks. Status: one sock will be finished tomorrow morning-- the other is an inch from the heel. (Both are toe-up, and clearly this is not a recent photo...)

For some reason I was obsessed with this colorway about two years ago. Last winter I used one of the skeins to knit a Charlotte's Web shawl. This left *three* skeins of the same colorway in the stash. Seriously, four skeins of the same koigu color-- all without a project in mind? Talk about a fiber addiction-- especially when I should have used the money to work on my house!!!

These socks will eat up two more skeins from the stash, along with a little black gems for the heels & some "ornamenture" at the top of the sock. This will leave one final skein left-- a lighter version with lots of silver and some black/purple streams. I know I'll be tired of the color for a while, so it will be used at a later date to make a short pair of socks with a grey Rowan 4-ply yarn from Joyce's garage sale for toes and heels. (Joyce is a blogless MSP knitter. sorry.)

Next post: I won a contest from kmkat's blog! Yesterday I received a skein of All Things Heather yarn in the mail. Picture forthcoming. I've never tried her yarn, a lovely fingering 100% machine washable merino, so I'm excited to give it a go. At first glance it's very similar to Gem's pearl. Knitting it, of course, is the true test of sock worthiness!

Have a great Friday, everyone.

December 4th!- and no photo!!!

On the knitting front, I'm on the toe of a Meilenweit Mega Boots sock-- a lovely red colorway. They were for me, but they fit my mother too well... and, ahem, it's her favorite color.

Photos will return someday... :)

During the past week I've been dealing with KCC- Knitting Deficit Disorder. I've been switching back and forth between multiple projects, and I can't seem to focus on any given item. For example, a cute little baby hat needs only two inches of decreases before completion-- the needles were stolen to test-swatch some KP alpaca for fingerless mitts (holiday gift)-- and never returned to the hat!

I'm almost embarrased to say how many works in progress there are around my house. Last night the partially finished socks were inventoried. Let's just say I'm ready for at least 15 snow days this winter.

So, it's December 4th, and I'm in partial denial. See, the plan is to finish a pair of socks (.67% completed) for a Women's size 7 relative, another sock pair for a men's size 12 (.06% completed), and knit the top bits and sleeves of a cabled men's aran (.6% done) before the holidays. Heh. At the current rate of KDD, none will be finished!

I forgot my camera-- so instead of the finished Thanksgiving socks, here's the pair I wore on Saturday!

yarn: Trekking XXL, 100 colorway
completion: oh, about a year ago
pattern: a simple knit 5, purl 2-- then shift one over every two rows. Garter stitch heels a-la Lucy Neatby, and a star-ribbed toe.
