Vet Visit

Work phone call with bad news.

Paco has Heartworm.

He'll be staying at the Dog hospital for the next few days in a controlled, motionless, quiet, environment.

After that, he'll need to remain motionless (Ha!) for an extended period of time at home. Paco is an incredibly active dog.

I think I'll need to find a surrogate home for Toby for a short period of time-- perhaps a visit to his doggy grandparents and cousin "running stupid" Max? (Max is a lab. He's a lovely dog, but not the brightest dog in the pack.)

I stopped giving them heartworm treatment when the weather was cool-- but the first frost was a few weeks away. Clearly this was a bad choice.

Have you ever dealt with this? Any advice?

Oh no! Poor Paco! I have no experience, but poor little guy.

The only experience I've had was with a foster dog my brother had. His case was caught VERY late and they were unable to help him. Sounds like you caught it early so be optimistic!

Bummer. My only experience is 20 years ago when I was working for a vet. The treatment has hopefully improved since then. Must remember to call to get the cats their meds...

I had a dog about 10 years ago that I rescued. She had heartworms but came through treatment fine. She lived another 7 years. Hope Paco will do well.

Get well soon Paco!
My vet tells me to give the pills until Nov (not all winter) so I think you did the best you could.

No experience, but I hope he comes through it okay!

Not a bit of experience but sending Paco good vibes for quick healing.

oh no. hopefully you caught it early. I give my dogs heartworm prevention year round even though we live in the northeast. with all the inside areas they are in, mosquitoes can live year round now it seems. I have known a few dogs to survive it just fine - just keep to the vet's instructions and my prayers are with you and paco! Think positive!
